MSD Performance Distributors: Which One Suits Your Needs?
MSD Performance was the first to introduce aftermarket distributors made from billet 6061-T6 aluminum. Today, Pro-Billet Distributors are available for most popular domestic V8 engines, as well as other performance applications.
While all MSD distributors share high-quality components—such as a non-magnetic pickup, a QPQ-coated shaft, and an upper ball bearing for stability—there are different models tailored for specific needs.
MSD Pro-Billet Distributors
This is the classic MSD distributor and the most widely used in the lineup. It requires an MSD Ignition Control (such as the 6AL or 7AL-2) and features a 2-pin connector for direct integration.
Available for engines from AMC to Chevrolet W-series, Pro-Billet distributors are designed for everything from street performance to full race applications. Some models include vacuum advance, while others are locked out for racing use. If you're using one of these, make sure to pair it with an MSD Ignition Control.
🔹 Key Features:
✔ Requires MSD Ignition Control
✔ 2-pin connector
✔ Available for a wide range of engines
✔ Suitable for street and race applications
MSD Ready-to-Run Distributors
For those who want a simpler installation, the Ready-to-Run series is the perfect choice. Unlike the Pro-Billet models, these do not require an external MSD Ignition Control—instead, they feature a built-in ignition module.
These distributors come with a 3-pin Weathertight connector and can be installed with just three wires: power, ground, and coil negative. This makes them particularly popular for street rods and muscle cars. Additionally, they feature a gray tach output wire, allowing easy integration with a tachometer or an aftermarket EFI system like MSD Atomic EFI.
🔹 Key Features:
✔ No external MSD Ignition Control needed
✔ 3-pin Weathertight connector
✔ Easy drop-in installation
✔ Includes tach output wire for EFI or tachometer
✔ Adjustable rev limiter available
MSD HEI Pro-Billet Distributors
The Chevrolet HEI distributor is a well-known favorite among muscle car, street rod, and circle track racers. However, stock HEI systems lack performance and accuracy.
MSD’s Pro-Billet HEI addresses these shortcomings with a high-output ignition system, ensuring stronger and more accurate spark delivery. The integrated coil simplifies installation by reducing external wiring, making it a popular choice for race cars requiring a clean setup.
🔹 Key Features:
✔ High-performance replacement for stock HEI
✔ Stronger and more accurate ignition
✔ Integrated coil for clean installation
✔ Ideal for muscle cars and race applications
MSD Crank Trigger Distributors
As the name suggests, Crank Trigger Distributors work in conjunction with a crank trigger system to fire the ignition. These models do not have a built-in trigger mechanism or advance system—they only distribute spark.
Designed exclusively for high-performance racing, they are easily identified by their low-profile design and lack of wiring.
🔹 Key Features:
✔ Requires a crank trigger to function
✔ No internal trigger mechanism or advance
✔ Designed strictly for race applications
OEM Upgrade Distributors
For those looking to upgrade their stock distributor, MSD offers Pro-Billet distributors that serve as OEM replacements. A great example is the Ford TFI distributor, commonly used in Fox-body Mustangs.
These models provide increased strength and durability while maintaining factory-style connectors, modules, and pickups, making installation a true plug-and-play experience.
🔹 Key Features:
✔ Direct replacement for factory distributors
✔ Maintains OEM-style connectors
✔ Improved strength and reliability
Street Fire Distributors – High Performance at a Value Price
MSD also offers the Street Fire series, a budget-friendly performance option. These distributors are built from cast aluminum and provide reliable performance at an affordable price.
🔹 Key Features:
✔ Budget-friendly performance solution
✔ Cast aluminum housing
✔ Excellent value for money
